30/04/13 Clams Casino – Bookfiend (feat. DOOM)
Well this is a pleasant surprise. The legendary MF DOOM has shed the MF and linked up with super-producer Clams Casino on this new track. Clams’ style is much different from the traditional Madlib soundscape that has become inextricably linked with MF DOOM, but this song just flat out works. DOOM’s flow is almost non existent, but it pairs nicely with the spacey production and his lyrics are on point.

30/04/13 Bravestation – All We Have is Us
Bravestation released an amazing album last summer, but it looks like they’ve been busy at work sine then. Today, they released their new single “All We Have is Us” off of their upcoming EP IV. In typical Bravestation fashion, the song moves to the beat of electric drum kits and steel drums. Like some tropical paradise from the past under a moonlit sky, “All We Have is Us” moves with a swift passion. In the few months since their album, it even seems like they’ve evolved. Their sound used to be a launching from the shore, reaching for distant lands, but his new song is that arrival from the waters into this strange paradise. Look for the EP May 15th, download here, and listen below

24/04/13 Blaue Blume – On New Year’s Eve
Somewhere in between the dramatic and powerful sound of early Genesis, 80s angst and singer Antony lies Blaue Blume. This singer form Copenhagen has but one released song under his belt, and boy is it a good one. “On New Year’s Eve” is strange and fragile, a song with dark undertones and a delicate voice, skipping from note to note as if the melody could shatter at any moment due to the desperate voice. It’s the setting sun, dark and fleeting which quickly becomes darkness and then the dawn, dancing into a new and mystery day. It’s enveloping and you can hear it below. Hopefully we’ll here more about this guy soon.

22/04/13 The Money Go Round – Endless Sun
Warm nostalgia coming your way, with clips to match. It’s not surprising that The Money Go Round sound soaked in nostalgic pop, given that they have the same name as a Kinks song. This aussie group makes music that is both trippy at points and just straight-up fun in the sun. Guitars jangle out sun rays and singers harmonize like the Byrds around a snappy snare and a tight bass. “Endless Sun” is another one of those great summer songs that start to pop up at this time of the year. An idyllic look at a summer weekend on the beach, without cares and without worries. The music video matches perfectly with a mix of trippy filters and scenes of parties that many a “hip” beer commercial might consider stealing. Check out the video above and download the song (and another singe) for free here. Expect some great stuff from these guys down the road.

17/04/13 Cayucas – East Coast Girls
West coast girls seem to dominate music’s past. Since before the Beach Boys, artists have been singing the glory and beauty of the tan, fun-loving west coat girl. Well now the east coast finally gets its chance with Cayucas. True, this band is from California, but their summery sound has stretched across states to create a bright and upbeat song about a young girl who’s moved to the east coast for college. Ok, so technically it is about a west coat girl, but I’ll take it. The sound is somewhere in between Local Natives and Dirty Gold, full of handclaps and jangly guitars. With their warm sound, it’s hard not to listen without moving to this danceable beat. Check it out below and see if you don’t catch yourself listening on repeat for a while. Their debut album Bigfoot is out April 30th

14/04/13 Chance The Rapper – Nana
Chance The Rapper is back with a new video! The concept of the video is simple and brilliant. Chance is given $5,000 dollars to create a music video, and he spends it the same way you would: on a giant chicken suit and lunch with Childish Gambino. ‘NaNa’ is another song off the upcoming Acid Rap and I cannot wait. I love the flow Chance uses to open up his first verse, and the hook is oddly catchy for how simple it is.

11/04/13 The Last Emperor – Secret Wars I
The Last Emperor has been floating around the rap world for a while now, but does not get the recognition he deserves. Today, Tour De Vaap brings you a throw back from 1998. ‘Secret Wars I’ is one of the more creative tracks I have ever heard and I don’t want to give away the surprise. Let’s just say everyone from Common to Wolverine makes an appearance. If you are a fan of hip-hop, comic books, or both, you’re gonna love this track….we guarantee it. Download it here and get your Spidey on.

11/04/13 Lightning Dust – Diamond
“Say it slowly, you still shine like a diamond”
So I’m a sucker for synths. When used correctly, they can add just as much or more meaning to a song than any acoustic instrument. This is where Lightning Dust come in. On their sparse new single, “Diamond,” fat synths roll along to a sparse drum kit beat in typical 80s fashion. Amber Webber takes the higher end of the spectrum, singing a love song of sweet nothings. It’s a tried and true formula, that gets me every time. A smooth love song for those summer nights on the hood of your car, music blasting from the radio. You can check out the single above and look for the full album Fantasy June 25th.

09/04/13 Carla Bruni – Chez Keith et Anita
So we all know “Quelqu’un m’a dit” (if you don’t, look it up. It’s beautiful), but Carla Bruni’s got much more to her name than just that one song. She’s been recording for more than 15 years and is gearing up to release her fourth solo album Little French Songs which, despite the name, is a collection of French, Italian and English language songs. It’s a very eclectic mix set for US release April 16th, just in time for the spring album rush. One of my favorites is “Chez Keith et Anita,” probably because it is so different from “Quelqu’un m’a dit.” Rather than quiet and somber, it’s a bright song with horns and tropical percussion. It’s a sweet, fun love song showing a side to Bruni most don’t know and you can stream it below. Bonus: it’s great for practicing your french skills.
